First chapter of a short story

I am trying to write a short story called "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness". I just finished the rough first chapter (out of 3 chapters) and you can read it here. Comment on it if you want to. Remember, it's only the first chapter. You might be thinking to yourself, "How can it go anywhere from there?" Oh, it can go much farther than there...... 2 more chapters farther to be exact.
